The Factory, the Ghetto and Kazimierz

The museum sits in Zabłocie, minutes from where the Kraków ghetto stood and across the river from Kazimierz. Why the combined walking tours make more sense here than any other pairing.

Updated August 2026

Of all the ways to combine this museum with something else, the walking pairing is the one that genuinely adds understanding rather than just filling a day.

The geography

The museum is in Zabłocie, on the south bank. A few minutes’ walk away is Podgórze, where the Germans confined the Kraków ghetto from 1941 — including Plac Bohaterów Getta, the square now filled with empty steel chairs, and the surviving fragments of the ghetto wall. Across the river is Kazimierz, the historic Jewish quarter the ghetto’s inhabitants were removed from.

The exhibition inside the factory tells that story. Standing in the places is what makes it land.

Note the cheapest of these is a walking tour without museum admission — useful if you already hold a museum ticket, or are going on a free Monday, and want the geography explained separately.

A sensible order

Ghetto and Kazimierz first, museum second. Walking the streets and then seeing them reconstructed inside the exhibition works better than the reverse, and it means your timed museum slot anchors the end of the day rather than the start.

What not to combine it with

An Auschwitz-Birkenau day trip. Some operators sell them together and it is a very long day; the Memorial deserves its own. If you are doing both in one trip, put a day between them.

The rest of Kraków — the Old Town, the river, Wawel — sits easily around this. A river cruise is about as different in register as the city offers, which after an afternoon in Podgórze is not a bad thing.
